Senior Manager - Financial Services & Payments Compliance

We are seeking an experienced and proactive Manager or Senior Manager of Financial Services & Payments Compliance to lead and manage compliance obligations across our Australian operations. This role is critical in ensuring the business adheres to all relevant regulatory requirements including those set by ASIC, AUSTRAC, RBA, AFCA and APRA, with a focus on payments systems, consumer protections and financial services licensing. At Shaype, we prioritise a flexible working environment while valuing in-person collaboration. Our current working model includes 2 days in our Surry Hills office, with an expectation of additional office days as and when required.

What We Need

  • We are seeking an experienced and proactive Manager or Senior Manager of Financial Services & Payments Compliance to lead and manage compliance obligations across our Australian operations. This role is critical in ensuring the business adheres to all relevant regulatory requirements including those set by ASIC, AUSTRAC, RBA, AFCA and APRA, with a focus on payments systems, consumer protections and financial services licensing.
  • The successful candidate will be responsible for the execution of the compliance framework, policies, and day-to-day compliance oversight and monitoring activities. You will work cross-functionally with legal, risk, operations, and product teams to embed a strong compliance culture and operational resilience.

Key Responsibilities

Design & Implementation

  • Maintain and enhance the compliance framework, policies, and procedures to meet Australian regulatory requirements for financial services and payments.
  • Lead implementation of new compliance initiatives, including responses to regulatory changes or business growth.
  • Collaborate with internal stakeholders to ensure compliance considerations are embedded into product and operational design.

Compliance Operations

  • Manage the day-to-day compliance program including monitoring, controls testing, incident management, and regulatory reporting.
  • Oversee obligations registers, compliance attestations, and internal risk and compliance assessments.
  • Conduct gap analyses and remediation planning for current and upcoming regulatory changes (e.g. CPS 230, CDR, Payment Systems Review).
  • Coordinate compliance program operations including line 2 reviews.

Advisory & Training

  • Provide expert regulatory advice to business units, particularly around AFSL obligations, payments compliance, and consumer impacts.
  • Develop and deliver internal compliance training programs and awareness campaigns.
  • Engage in internal policy review cycles and contribute to regulatory change management processes.

Regulatory Engagement

  • Support regulatory interactions including responses to AUSTRAC, ASIC, RBA or and APRA queries, audits or investigations.
  • Prepare board and senior leadership reports on compliance performance and emerging compliance and regulatory risks.

Required Qualifications & Experience

Qualifications & Experience

  • Bachelor’s degree in Law, Business, Finance, or a related discipline; post-graduate qualifications in compliance or risk preferred.
  • 5+ years (Manager) / 8+ years (Senior Manager) of experience in financial services compliance or payments compliance within Australia.
  • Strong working knowledge of relevant Australian legislation and regulatory expectations, including:
  • Corporations Act & ASIC Regulatory Guidance
  • Payment Systems (Regulation) Act
  • Privacy Act and CDR regime
  • Banking Act & APRA prudential requirements

Skills & Competencies

  • Demonstrated ability to design and operationalise compliance frameworks.
  • Strong analytical and problem-solving skills; ability to interpret complex regulations and apply them pragmatically.
  • Exceptional stakeholder management and communication skills, including influencing senior leadership.
  • Strong attention to detail, organisational skills, and ability to manage multiple competing priorities.

Desirable Experience:

  • Experience in financial services, banking or payments institutions or regulatory bodies (e.g., ASIC, APRA).
  • Exposure to international compliance regimes (e.g., UK FCA, MAS, or US FinCEN) a plus.
  • Familiarity with regtech tools and compliance automation platforms.
