Shaype has been rapidly building out its embedded finance ecosystem for the past 7 years and in doing so has achieved accelerating growth and uncovered significant opportunities in the marketplace.
-
Due to this ongoing growth, we have an opportunity to add to our existing Australian team. We're looking for a Head of Financial Crime to lead the design, execution, and continuous improvement of our financial crime framework—covering AML/CTF, fraud, sanctions, KYC, and transaction monitoring.
-
This critical role requires an experienced financial crime professional who combines deep subject matter expertise with operational leadership.
-
You’ll bring a sharp focus to risk mitigation, regulatory readiness, and control design while enabling commercial outcomes through effective, scalable processes for our clients and their end users.
-
This role is Sydney based and offers flexible working arrangements – up to 3 days per week working from home.
About the role
As Head of Financial Crime at Shaype, you will lead the end-to-end delivery of our financial crime framework, overseeing operational execution across AML/CTF, sanctions, fraud, and KYC. You’ll be responsible for building and optimising scalable processes that protect Shaype and its clients, ensuring regulatory compliance, and
maintaining the highest standards of integrity across our embedded
finance ecosystem.
Working closely with cross-functional teams—including Product, Technology (in both Australia and the UK), Customer Success, and Risk & Compliance—you’ll align people, systems, and controls to deliver efficient, risk-based financial crime operations that support Shaype’s ongoing growth.
This role requires a dynamic, hands-on leader who brings deep experience in financial crime operations, a strong grasp of relevant regulatory frameworks (e.g. AUSTRAC AML/CTF Act), and the ability to drive continuous improvement in a fast-paced fintech
environment.
Key Responsibilities
-
Lead day-to-day financial crime operations, covering AML/CTF, fraud prevention, sanctions screening, and KYC/CDD activities.
-
Own and continuously improve key operational processes, including transaction monitoring, alert handling, investigations, customer due diligence, and regulatory reporting (e.g. SMRs).
-
Build and lead a high-performing team, overseeing internal analysts and third-party providers to ensure efficient and compliant execution of financial crime controls.
-
Design and implement risk-based onboarding and monitoring workflows that support both compliance and a seamless customer experience.
-
Manage operational playbooks and ensure alignment to evolving regulatory expectations and Shaype’s risk appetite.
-
Develop and monitor KPIs and quality assurance frameworks to measure team performance and process effectiveness.
-
Use data and technology to drive automation, improve alert quality, and deliver actionable insights into financial crime trends.
-
Partner with Risk and Compliance, Product, Technology, and
Customer Success to embed controls throughout the client and end
user (customer) lifecycle and product stack. -
Support incident management and post-event analysis where financial crime risks have materialised.
-
Represent Financial Crime Operations in leadership and governance forums, contributing to Shaype’s overall risk posture and business resilience.
-
Support the evolution of Shaype’s back-office tooling (e.g. Control Centre) to better enable financial crime workflows and case management.
-
Provide hands on support for the Financial Crime team with transactions monitoring, filing SMRs and liaising with clients and customers when / as required.
What experience will you have
-
10+ years’ experience in financial crime, AML/CTF, fraud, or risk/compliance roles within financial services, fintech, or payments.
-
Demonstrated ability to build and scale high-performing teams, with a strong track record of delivering operational outcomes in regulated environments.
-
Solid understanding of Australian payment systems, including card issuing, NPP, Direct Entry, and BPAY—and how financial crime risks intersect with these channels.
-
Experience implementing and optimising case management tools, workflow automation, and operational playbooks to improve team efficiency and quality.
-
Demonstrated experience leading or contributing to the build, migration, or enhancement of financial crime systems (e.g. transaction monitoring platforms or financial intelligence tools), ideally as part of a strategic transformation or system
implementation project. -
Strong grasp of regulatory obligations (e.g. AUSTRAC rules and guidance) and experience preparing for and engaging in regulatory reviews, audits, or independent assurance.
-
Strong communication and stakeholder management skills, with experience presenting to senior leadership, regulators, or governance forums.
